Lake Nakuru

Welcome to the Great Rift, where a shift in tectonic plates gives way to alkaline water rife with algae – the perfect playing grounds for thousands of pink flamingos! The walls of flamingos that flock to Lake Nakuru makes this destination the best in the world for flamingo watching, and the pelican viewing is a sight to see as well. Simply a bird watcher’s paradise, Lake Nakuru provides a pleasant compliment to the land-bound game drives. Three major rivers drain into this expansive lake, which was initially heralded as a bird sanctuary before it was known to house a good variety of mammals, too. In all, more than 450 species of birds and 56 different mammalian species reside in Lake Nakuru, including the rare white rhino. A remarkable amount of blue-green algae serves as the basis of the food chain in this ecosphere.

Veer from the flamingos and you’ll come across members of Lake Nakuru’s rhino sanctuary, home to both black and white rhinos. Buffalo also roam in this mystic wonderland of ecodiversity. The marshlands and cliffs of the area serve as a bountiful playground for the baboons of this region, some of which may even climb on your car of you don’t watch out.
