Tsavo West

Known as “the land of lava,” recent volcanic activity makes Tsavo West an interesting array of savanna grasslands, brush and scrublands, punctuated with enchanting springs. Tsavo West is part of the largest national park of Kenya, which comprises of 4 percent of Kenya’s total land mass. The park itself represents 30 percent of Kenya’s national parks! With a mountainous backdrop and Lake Jipe on its Tanzanian edge, Tsavo West plays host to a myriad of attractions, including caving and volcano watching, underwater hippo spotting, a rhino sanctuary, elephants and wide variety of vegetation and birding. Because of this area’s geography and biodiversity, there is something for everyone at this expansive national park, from herbivores and birds to mammals and their predators.

Be sure to check out the Mzima Springs, where relaxing hippos and nearby crocodiles are a sight to behold. Bird lovers will enjoy Chaimu Crater, a gathering spot for eagles, buzzards, and falcons. Scenic hills and roaring rocks are majestic to watch, but don’t keep your head in the clouds too long; roaming impalas and waterbuck, steaming lava, and springs of hippos are other pictures you’ll be able to add to your collection during your visit to Tsavo West!
